Environmentally as well as economically, overusing chemical pesticides has proved to be unaffordable. Farmers face mounting debts in the form of increased input costs and health problems from exposure to contaminated land and water. The practice in itself is detrimental not only to humans but to the ecosystem as well. Looking at the high use of chemical pesticides the need to introduce better practices is high.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an eco-friendly and sustainable system of crop protection that maximizes yields and profits with the least possible effect on the environment. Various pest control methods are integrated in a judicious way to maintain the pest populations below the economic threshold (ETL) – the level below which pest populations do not cause economic injury to the crop.
