Objectives

The long term objective of the project is to improve the rural livelihood security in Dhemaji district of Assam introducing integrated farming system approach in different flood related situations.

The project objectives are -

  1. To improve the livelihood of the rural poor with efficient management of natural resources by enhancing productivity, profitability and diversity of farming system.

Hypothesis: The IFS module in project area for agriculture and farming system development shall contribute to the alleviation of food insecurity, malnutrition and poverty through the provision of high nutritional value food, income and employment generation. The module will also provide option for risk due to flood through sustainable resource management and increased farm sustainability. Spice production and processing, promotion of horticulture and community based aquaculture will enhance livelihood security, additional income.

  1. To improve the delivery mechanism through skill development of primary stake holders on    improved practices of Agriculture, Livestock, Apiculture and Post Harvest Technology.

Hypothesis: Development of skill for protecting and managing the natural resource base, and promotion of new technologies in agriculture, vegetable cultivation scientific management of animal husbandry and apiculture. Demonstration cum skill up gradation training of organic farming which include integrated pest & nutrient management and alternate farming practices for the flood affected areas. The initiative will promote sustainable agricultural practices among professionals, small holder farmers and other rural development stakeholders. This will result in farming practices that improve agricultural productivity, while minimizing environmental impact.

  1. To develop institutional mechanism among the primary stake holders for adopting the approaches and establishing market linkages for income generation activity.

Hypothesis: The institutional support will strengthen the market linkages for effective management of sustainable agriculture, open up option for credit and input supply which would result in poverty reduction through increased income opportunities at house hold level.

 In order to understand why and how it is so, we sought to analyze the practices people have adopted, and found how these practices underline the peoples livelihood resilience in flood affected regions.
