Cage culture of
fish |
Assam
has a vast potential aquatic resource in the
form of open and closed beel fisheries. To
ameliorate the situation insitu availability of
advanced carp seed in such beel fisheries, the
college of Fisheries, Raha initiated a non
conventional cage culture system of carp seed
raising. Cages were made of woven split bamboo.
Only matured bamboo is used to ensure
longitivity and use for 4-5 seasons. The cages
were installed at suitable areas in marginal
areas of beels to raise the carp seeds. The non
conventional method of carp seed raising in
cages in marginal areas of beel , in close
coordination of lease owner and local SHG youth
organizations has drawn attention in recent
times.

Fresh water Prawn
Culture |
The total
captured fishery (beels, wetlands etc.) area in
Dhemaji district is 68,900 ha and average fish
production is 70 kg/ha/year. The total
production of fish under captured fishery is
4823 tones in a year. Beels and wetland can be
extensively utilized for fresh water prawn
culture in Dhemaji district. Beels are major
fishery resources contributing to about 25 % of
the fish production. However, major portions
have been rendered unproductive due to excessive
siltation and growth of weeds and only about 33
% of the potential is being utilised for
fisheries. . Development of beels could be
achieved by desiltation, deepening of connecting
canals, deweeding and suitable changes in
leasing policies.
The effort has
been taken to increase the fish production and
Freshwater prawn cultivation would be considered
as one option. A freshwater prawn farm is an
aquaculture business designed to
raise and produce freshwater
prawn or
shrimp for human consumption. Private
entrepreneurs would be encouraged for
undertaking polyculture of prawn with fish.
Freshwater prawn farms are better amenable to
small-scale businesses run by a family |
